Suction Bucket Foundation

The suction bucket foundation is installed using suction pressure within the bucket.
Cost reduction is expected by not using large construction equipment, and the environmental impact can be reduced without the noise and vibration caused by such equipment. Additionally, removal of the entire structure is possible by simply injecting water into the bucket.

Suction Bucket Foundation

Expanding applicable areas for fixed-bottom offshore wind

The strengths and weaknesses of conventional foundation methods are summarized below.

Compared to monopile and jacket structures, the suction bucket foundation requires a thinner sedimentary layer, thereby expanding the applicable areas for fixed-bottom offshore wind.

Features

  • Shorter penetration depth so applicable for thin sedimentary layers
  • Installed by water pump only, so virtually no noise and vibration
  • Removed by water injection, so entire foundation can be decomissioned
  • Cost reduction possible since no large construction equipment needed
  • Transition pieces not necessary due to high precision verticality, which shortens construction time and costs
